Stichopathes pourtalesi forms unbranched, spiral-shaped colonies that are 1 metre or more in height and wind distally into several spirals.
The polyps have a diameter of 0.8–1.7 mm and are spaced 1.0–2.7 mm apart.
Living colonies are light brown or white in colour.
The corals were collected in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico at depths of between 82 and 299 metres (Bo & Opresko, 2015), with specimens from Bermuda collected at depths of between 143 and 305 metres.
