Info

Eunicella singularis (Esper, 1791)

Eunicella singularis is white with whip-like branches, that tend to grow verticaly parallel. The polyps are light greenish-brown in colour and indicates the presence of zooxanthellae. The Singular sea fan can be usually found on rocky bottoms to 20 m depht. The sea fan is often partially covered with sediment.

Analysis of histological preparations of E. singularis showed that all colonies from 20 and 30 m had zooxanthellae in their tissues, whereas all colonies from 40, 50,and 60 m lacked zooxanthellae ("Characterization of the zooxanthellate and azooxanthellate morphotypes of the Mediterranean gorgonian Eunicella singularis". )
